Window coverings, more commonly referred to as curtains, are used to cover the windows, for blocking the sun’s rays. In other words, additional weatherproofing is the main motive of curtains. They are mainly used for the protection of the decorative items. Man being aesthetic in nature loved to protect the finer aspects of life. Window coverings are used for both interior, as well as, the exterior.
Some of the examples of window coverings are drapes, curtains, window blinds and the like. They are used for a variety of purposes, such as light control and insulation, slangs, galleries etc. In this way, drapes serve manifold purposes.
Drapes or curtains come in varied thickness and fabrics. In each, the quality of light absorption is different. For instance, the heat absorption capability will be different in cotton drapes, as compared to uncoated ones. Sheer curtains, also known as the privacy curtains, may allow one to get a clear view of the world outside; it prevents one to gaze inside. Uncoated fabrics remain opaque even in light, thereby providing a good degree of heat insulation. Curtains are also used as slangs, in the sense that, it is a rude gesture, pointing to endings. There is an increase in the commercial demand of drapes and window coverings. In fact, they are used in theatres, restaurants and hotels, as well as, cinema halls.
Hence, one can say that, draperies and curtains serve a variety of purposes, rather than aesthetics. They have become an important part of our lives, in the sense that, they offer privacy to us. To be honest, aesthetic values have now become secondary.
